Types and Selection of Adult Sleeping Bags

Created on 09.27
If you plan to go camping outdoors, it is essential to choose a suitable sleeping bag. Adult sleeping bags can generally be divided into cotton sleeping bags, down sleeping bags, goose down sleeping bags, etc., and you can make your selection based on the outdoor environment.

I. Ordinary Outdoor Outing Camping
This type of activity usually involves taking kids out, especially for people living in cities. Skyscrapers are springing up everywhere in cities, but little consideration is given to the fact that besides living spaces, people need more activity spaces. More and more parents choose to take their kids to get close to nature during holidays, such as going to the beach or parks. This kind of camping is generally done in spring or summer. You can drive there with a tent, a picnic mat, food, and other supplies.
In such temperatures, cotton sleeping bags or fleece sleeping bags are usually suitable. Sleeping bags with an envelope style are better—they can be fully unfolded to be used as quilts. Since you have a car, there’s no need to worry about the weight. The temperature is not very low, so you can choose any sleeping bag with a comfort temperature rating around 10–20°C.
II. Outdoor Hiking and Mountaineering
This type of outdoor experience is more professional, and people are more careful when selecting equipment, choosing the best options based on factors like functionality, weight, and purpose. Personally, I prefer down sleeping bags—they offer good warmth retention, are lightweight, and perform well in all aspects.
When choosing a down sleeping bag, the key factors are as follows:
Temperature rating comes first—this ensures you won’t freeze.
Fill weight and the quality of the down.
Whether the fabric is water-repellent.
Generally, a sleeping bag with a temperature rating of -10°C to 0°C is sufficient.
It is said that for down with the same fill power, natural down is better than water-repellent down. In terms of the sleeping bag’s lifespan and warmth retention function, natural down lasts longer because it hasn’t undergone chemical treatment. Although the temperature ratings may be almost the same, the fill weight varies depending on the quality of the down: better-quality down requires less fill to reach the specified temperature rating, while lower-quality down needs more fill to achieve the same rating.
The thickness of the fabric can generally be judged by its weight. Almost all down sleeping bags available on the market use water-repellent fabrics to prevent the sleeping bag from getting damp.
III. Extreme Challenges in Snowy Mountains and Tibetan Areas
Those who take part in this kind of activity are truly professionals. Not only do they need to be professional, but more importantly, they must have a strong physical fitness and good stamina. Recently, there have even been traffic jams on Mount Everest, and a large number of route markers have been set up. You should proceed with caution—here, the risk is not just freezing to death, but waiting to die due to oxygen deprivation. It’s hard to understand whether the thrill gained from this impulsive experience is really that exciting.
The equipment must be professional and complete: oxygen is indispensable, and clothing can be custom-made. For sleeping bags, if budget is not an issue, it is recommended to buy goose down sleeping bags with a low temperature rating.
